Below are historical photos of various road signs on roads in the San Antonio area and elsewhere in Texas.  These photos are all from the TxDOT photo archive.

US 81 at SH 123 in San Marcos viewing south
This is today's intersection of I-35 and SH 123.  As you can see from the sign, this intersection was a traffic circle before I-35 was built.
(1962/TxDOT)

US 81 at SH 123 in San Marcos viewing south
Earlier sign for the same intersection.  Note that directional signs were black on white.
(1955/TxDOT)

FM 2336, Bastrop County
Previous incarnation of the Farm-to-Market sign.
(1959/TxDOT)

SH 16 and FM 689 (today's SH 173) in Kerrville
Even earlier Farm-to-Market sign (left bottom).  Again, note the black-and-white directional signs.
(ca. 1955/TxDOT)

SH 103 at FM 706, Angelina Count west of Lufkin
Yet an even earlier version of the Farm-to-Market road sign.
(ca. 1945/TxDOT)

Old Texas State Highway marker
This one is for SH 35, probably between Houston and Corpus Christi.
(Date unknown/TxDOT)

US 81/SH 2
Likely somewhere in Central Texas along today's I-35.
(Date unknown, probably ca. 1940/TxDOT)

US 81/SH 29/SH 2 in Austin
The "R" sign at the bottom indicates that traffic wanting to follow these routes must turn right at the next intersection.  This predates the standard arrow signs of today.
(Date unknown, but probably ca. 1935/TxDOT)

Roadside Park sign, RR 12 on Devil's Backbone near Wimberly
(ca. 1955/TxDOT)

Old San Antonio Road historical information sign
(ca. 1955/TxDOT)

An early incarnation of the famous sign in Hondo
(ca. 1955/TxDOT)
