I-10 from Dominion to Ralph Fair
page last updated December 4, 2016
I-10 West from Dominion Dr. to
Ralph Fair Rd.
Status: Nearing completion (81% complete)
This project will widen the
access roads in each direction and convert them to one-way operation.
The existing access road through Leon Springs will remain
two-way and a new one-way "bypass" access road will be built from the
southern end of Leon Springs to Boerne Stage Rd. in the existing
I-10 right-of-way (i.e. behind the elementary school.)
Modifications will be made to all the
existing entrance and exit ramps that will straighten and lengthen them
and, in a couple of cases, relocate them. In addition, two new
ramps will be added: an EB exit for Dominion and a WB entrance from
Dominion. Boerne Stage Rd.
under I-10 and its approaches on either side of I-10 will be widened.
Similarly, the Ralph Fair Rd. overpass and its approaches
will also be widened. New turnarounds will be added WB to EB
at Boerne Stage and at Ralph Fair and EB to WB at Dominion.
project will not make any modifications to the I-10 main lanes.
project will help:
intersections of Boerne Stage Rd. and I-10 and Ralph Fair Rd. and I-10
congestion daily due to insufficient capacity and bottlenecks caused by
obsolete ramp arrangements and the two-way access roads.
Converting the access roads to one-way operation and widening
them will significantly increase capacity and improve safety both along
their length as well as at their intersections with Boerne Stage and
Ralph Fair due to improved signal operations. The new
"bypass" access road on WB I-10 will take traffic destined for Boerne
Stage Rd. out of Leon Springs allowing the existing road to be
used solely for local traffic and thus remain two-way for the
convenience of those motorists. (The "bypass" access road may
continued northward from Boerne Stage in a future project as
warranted.) The new turnarounds will
better facilitate local traffic affected by the one-way access road
The widening of the Boerne Stage underpass and Ralph Fair
overpass will increase capacity at those intersections.
Longer and straighter entrance and exit ramps will improve
the safety and efficiency of those maneuvers which should also help to
reduce some of the congestion on the I-10 mainlanes in those areas.
Moving the EB entrance from Boerne Stage further downstream
will allow it to better capture EB traffic leaving the HEB shopping
center. The new EB exit for Dominion will move through
traffic destined for Dominion Dr. or other points south of Boerne Stage
to its own exit and the new WB entrance ramp from Dominion will remove
that traffic from Leon Springs. Modeling done
these improvements shows an anticipated 36% reduction in
peak travel time a whopping 75% reduction in evening
period travel time. Research also suggests a 43% reduction in
crashes, especially on the access roads.
Construction on the Ralph Fair section of the project (everything north
of Boerne Stage Rd.) started in April 2014. The
remainder of the project got underway in April 2015.
projects are expected to require approximately 18 months to construct.
