This project will build the missing middle section of the

The Wurzbach Parkway was designed to provide an
alternative and direct east-west thoroughfare between Loops 410 and
1604 across the Northside thus removing longer-distance through traffic
from the off-kilter and incomplete grid of northern San Antonio.
This will provide vastly improved travel times for east-west
traffic and also will reduce congestion on a number of existing
corridors in the vicinity. It may also remove a small percentage
of traffic from both Loops 410 and 1604.

The final section of this project opened in September 2015.
US 281 improvements and interchange
Construction of the middle
section also includes several significant improvements along US 281
itself. Those are described separately on the US 281 North page.
Note that there
will not be a full interchange at US 281 at this time. Instead,
traffic connecting between the two roadways will use the US 281 access
roads. Specific maneuvers are outlined below:
- From US 281
- NB US
281 to EB Wurzbach: Exit at the new Wurzbach exit and turn right
- NB US
281 to WB Wurzbach: Exit at Bitters, take the turnaround, and then
turn right onto Wurzbach.
- SB US
281 to EB Wurzbach: Exit at the new Wurzbach exit, take the new
turnaround at Nakoma, and then turn right onto Wurzbach.
- SB US
281 to WB Wurzbach: Exit at the new Wurzbach exit and turn right
Wurzbach to US 281
Wurzbach to NB US 281: Exit at US 281 and turn right.
Wurzbach to SB US 281: Exit at US 281, turn right, then take the
turnaround at Bitters.
Wurzbach to NB US 281: Exit at US 281, turn right, then take the
new turnaround at Nakoma.
Wurzbach to SB US 281: Exit at US 281 and turn right.
at US 281 was not included due to funding constraints. A future
will be considered when traffic levels dictate and funding is
available. The location near the airport flight path and adjacent
development will limit any potential interchange designs.
