Some of these projects are currently in design One or more of the projects below are still in design. Descriptions below for projects that have not yet gone to construction are based on preliminary schematics and, as a result, details may change before the projects go to construction. This page will be updated when final schematics for each project are available. |
The projects below are already planned, but in early 2024, TxDOT began a new study for future projects in the I‑35 corridor. For more information on that study, see the Austin to San Antonio Link Study website. |
TxDOT has had several projects underway or in the works along the I‑35 corridor in Comal County to improve/reconfigure intersections and overpasses, adjust or reverse entrance and exit ramps, and convert the access roads to one-way operation where they were previously two-way. This page contains information about these projects.
Note that none of these projects will add any new through mainlanes to I‑35 itself. Planning is underway for future projects to do that. However, these projects do include the construction of several new or reconstructed overpasses on the I‑35 mainlanes.
The conversion of the access roads to one-way from Conrads Rd./Kohlenberg Rd. north of New Braunfels to FM 1102/York Creek Rd. (project #4 below) was the final project to convert all of the I‑35 access roads to one-way from the Medina River south of San Antonio all the way to Hillsboro.
Some of the descriptions below include snippets of the schematic; full schematics are at the bottom.

1 | FM 2252 to Schwab Rd. |
Status: Complete
Description
This project did the following:
- Reversed the entrance and exit ramps between FM 2252 and FM 1103 (i.e. switch the existing exit ramps to entrance ramps and vice-versa.)
- Changed the existing northbound entrance ramp from FM 1103 to an exit ramp for Schwab Rd. This provided more direct access to the Northcliffe and Homestead subdivisions. An auxiliary lane from the new entrance ramp south of FM 1103 and this exit ramp was added.
- Moved the northbound entrance ramp from FM 1103 to just past Covers Cove. An auxiliary lane on the access road between the preceding exit ramp and this entrance ramp was added.
- Moved the southbound entrance ramp from Schwab Rd. to just south of the old rest area (i.e. across from Country Club Blvd.)
- Moved the southbound exit ramp to FM 1103 to just north of the old rest area. An auxiliary lane on the access road between this ramp and the entrance ramp in the previous point was added.
- Constructed two "park & pool" (i.e. carpool) lots where the old rest areas used to be. These are accessed via the frontage roads.
2 | Schwab Rd. to Business 35 (North) |
Status: Unfunded; no estimated start date (may be broken into smaller projects)
Description
This project will do the following:
- Schwab Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Expand the Schwab Rd. intersection to accommodate new turnarounds as well as a future planned widening of Schwab Rd. This will require lengthening the existing I‑35 overpasses. To do so while maintaining traffic flow on I‑35, the new overpasses will be built slightly further to the outside of the existing ones; this will result in a slight outward bowing of I‑35. The space in the middle will be available for a future expansion of I‑35.
- Change the existing northbound entrance ramp from Schwab Rd. to an exit ramp for Engel Rd., and change the existing southbound exit ramp to Schwab Rd. to an entrance ramp from Engel Rd.
- Engel Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Construct the northbound entrance ramp from Schwab Rd. about a mile north of Schwab (in front of the classic car showroom), remove the existing northbound exit to Engel Rd., and convert the existing southbound entrance ramp from Engel Rd. to an exit for Schwab Rd.
- Realign the northbound access road approaching Engel Rd. slightly inward toward the freeway.
- Replace the existing Engel Rd. intersections with roundabouts ("dogbone interchange") and add turnarounds. This will require lengthening the existing I‑35 overpasses. Like at Schwab Rd., the new overpasses will be built slightly further to the outside of the existing ones resulting in a slight outward bowing of I‑35 with the space in the middle available to be used in a future expansion of I‑35. (See schematic below.)
- Replace the existing northbound entrance ramp from Engel Rd. with an exit ramp for Solms Rd., and replace the existing southbound exit to Engel Rd. with an entrance ramp from Solms Rd.
- Construct the new northbound entrance ramp from and the southbound exit to Engel Rd. about 8⁄10 of a mile north of Engel, build an auxiliary lane on the access roads between these ramps on the ones in the previous point, and remove the existing ramps just south of Solms Rd.
- Solms Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Widen the Solms Rd. overpass to four lanes and construct turnarounds.
- Replace the existing northbound entrance ramp from Solms Rd. with an exit ramp for Loop 337/
FM 482/ Rueckle Rd., and replace the existing southbound exit to Solms Rd. with an entrance ramp from Loop 337/ FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. - Replace the existing northbound exit ramp to Loop 337/
FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. with an entrance ramp from Solms Rd., and replace the existing southbound entrance ramp from Loop 337/ FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. with an exit to Solms. Rd. An auxiliary lane on the access roads between these ramps on the ones in the previous point will be added.
- Loop 337/Rueckle Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Widen the Loop 337/Rueckle Rd. overpass to four lanes in each direction (two through, two left turn) and construct turnarounds.
- Replace the existing northbound entrance ramp from Loop 337/
FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. with an exit ramp to Business 35/FM 1044, and replace the existing southbound exit ramp to Loop 337/ FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. with an entrance from Business 35. - Replace the existing northbound exit ramp to Business 35/FM 1044 with an entrance ramp from Loop 337/
FM 482/ Rueckle Rd., and replace the existing southbound entrance ramp from Business 35 with an exit ramp to Loop 337/ FM 482/ Rueckle Rd. An auxiliary lane on the access roads between these ramps on the ones in the previous point will be added.
- Business 35 South/Schmidt Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Add a third northbound lane on the approach to the Business 35 intersection.
- Replace the existing I‑35/
Business 35/ Schmidt Rd. intersections with multilane roundabouts ("dogbone interchange".) The existing turnarounds will be retained. (See schematic below.) - Replace the Business 35/
Hidalgo Ave./ Spur St./ Lone Star Ave. intersection with a multilane roundabout.
- Walnut Ave. intersection and vicinity
- Expand the Walnut Ave. intersection by adding an additional lane on all four approaches. This will result in two dedicated left-turn lanes and two dedicated through lanes on both directions of Walnut, and the addition of a dedicated right turn lane on both access roads.
- Replace the existing southbound exit ramp to Walnut Ave. with an entrance ramp from FM 725/Seguin Ave., and replace the existing southbound entrance ramp from FM 725/Seguin Ave. with an exit ramp for Walnut Ave.
- SH 46/Loop 337 intersection and vicinity
- Add an additional through lane on westbound SH 46 under I‑35 (allowing the two left lanes to become a dedicated double left-turn). Add an additional through lane on the northbound and southbound access roads (allowing the two left lanes to become a dedicated double left-turn). Also add a dedicated right-turn lane on the northbound access road.
- Add an additional lane in both directions of SH 46 between I‑35 and Business 35. The westbound right lane will become a dedicated right-turn lane to Business 35, and the eastbound right lane will become a dedicated right-turn lane to I‑35.
- Business 35 North intersection and vicinity
- Widen each direction of Business 35 under I‑35 to three lanes to support a future expansion/extension of that road. This will result in a double left-turn lane on northbound Business 35.
3 | I‑35 at FM 725 |
Status
- Under construction. Work started in January 2022 and is 85% complete with estimated completion in early 2025
- This project was paused for several months in early to mid 2023 due to an engineering issue.
- This project was paused again for a few months in mid 2024 due to an unexpected utility conflict. Work resumed in early July 2024.
Description
This project is making the following intersection improvements:
- Add a raised median on FM 725 between I‑35 and Bobolink Dr. and on Seguin Ave. between I‑35 and Business 35
- Convert Merriweather St. to a right-in/right-out intersection at Seguin Ave.
- Add a double right-turn lane from the northbound I‑35 access road to southbound FM 725
- Add an additional through lane on northbound FM 725 under I‑35 for a total of four lanes — two dedicated left-turn lanes and two through lanes
- Add an additional through lane on the southbound I‑35 access road
- Add a dedicated right-turn lane on northbound FM 725/Seguin Ave. at I‑35 and at Business 35
- Add a dedicated right-turn lane on southbound Seguin Ave. at I‑35
- Lengthen both the northbound and southbound turnaround approach lanes
4 | Business 35 (North) to FM 306 |
Status: Completed in 2023
Description
This project did the following:
- Reconfigured the FM 306/I‑35 intersection into a partial Displaced Left Turn (DLT) for westbound FM 306. This is similar to the partial DLT at Aquarena Springs Dr. and I‑35 in San Marcos.
- Extended the dedicated right turn lane on westbound FM 306.
- Improved the right turns on the northbound access road into New Braunfels Town Center, and installed a concrete island to prevent traffic coming from the turnaround from turning into the first two driveways.
- Removed the southbound exit ramp to Business 35 at Nissan Way and converted it to an entrance ramp, and removed the southbound entrance ramp just north of FM 306. Southbound traffic from FM 306 now enters I‑35 at the new entrance ramp at Nissan Way, and southbound I‑35 traffic exiting to Business 35 now uses the Post Rd. exit, which has been slightly relocated and lengthened.
- Removed the northbound entrance ramp immediately north of Business 35 and replaced it with an exit ramp, and removed the northbound exit ramp to FM 306. Northbound I‑35 traffic exiting to FM 306 now uses the new exit ramp near Business 35, and northbound traffic from Business 35 now enters I‑35 at the existing entrance ramp just just south of FM 306, which has been slightly relocated and lengthened.
5 | FM 306 to Watson Lane area |
Status: Completed in 2024
Description
This project did the following:
- Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Rd. intersection and vicinity
- Completely rebuilt the Conrads Lane/Kohlenberg Rd. interchange as a signalized intersection. The existing overpass and loop ramps were removed and replaced with an overpass for I‑35 over a new at-grade four-lane road (plus turn lanes) that connects Conrads to Kohlenberg.
- Widened the access roads in both directions to three lanes between FM 306 and Conrads Lane.
- Converted the access roads north of Conrads/Kohlenberg to one-way and expanded to three lanes (nominally.)
- Removed the existing northbound entrance ramp from and southbound exit ramp to Conrads/Kohlenberg and replaced with a new northbound exit ramp and southbound entrance ramp just north of there.
- Constructed a new northbound entrance ramp from and exit ramp to Conrads/Kohlenberg roughly 8⁄10 of a mile north of the existing ramps.
- Watson Lane area
- Built a new turnaround interchange about halfway between Conrads/Kohlenberg and Watson Lane West; this provides a more convenient crossover/turnaround location between those intersections with the access roads now converted to one-way. This is also the location for a future thoroughfare listed in the New Braunfels Regional Transportation Plan, which is now planned to be the main boulevard through the imminent Mayfair development.
- Relocated the northbound exit ramp to Watson Lane slightly further south.
- Relocated the southbound entrance ramp from Watson Lane across from Watson Lane East.
- Converted the access roads to one-way from Conrads/Kohlenberg to FM 1102/York Creek Rd. The access roads north of FM 1102 had already been converted to one-way in conjunction with a separate project north of the Hays county line that rebuilt the Posey Rd. interchange. With the completion of these conversions, all of the I‑35 frontage roads from San Antonio to Hillsboro are now one-way.
6 | Watson Lane to Hays county line |
Status: Unfunded; no estimated start date
Description
This project will do the following:
- Watson Lane area
- Convert the existing southbound entrance ramp from Watson Lane to an exit ramp, and construct a new northbound entrance ramp across from the new exit ramp.
- Demolish the existing Watson Lane overpass, and straighten the access roads in the vicinity.
- Construct a new intersection for I‑35 at Watson Lane West. An overpass for I‑35 will be built, and Watson Lane extended under the new overpass to the northbound access road. The intersection will also include turnarounds.
- Convert the existing northbound entrance ramp from Watson Lane to an exit to FM 1102/York Creek Rd.
- Convert the existing southbound exit ramp to Watson Lane to an entrance ramp from FM 1102/York Creek Rd.
- Construct a new southbound exit for Watson Lane near the existing entrance ramp from FM 1102/York Creek Rd.and remove the entrance ramp.
- Construct a new northbound entrance from Watson Lane near the existing exit ramp to FM 1102/York Creek Rd.and remove the exit ramp.
- FM 1102/York Creek Rd. intersection
- Completely rebuild the FM 1102/York Creek Rd.interchange as a more conventional intersection. The existing overpass and access ramps will be removed and replaced with an overpass for I‑35 over a new at-grade four-lane road (plus turn lanes) that connects FM 1102 to York Creek Rd. This reconfiguration will also realign the I‑35 roadway into the existing wide median at that location.
Schematics
Click on one of the images below to open the corresponding detailed schematic for this project from TxDOT with my own annotations added to help clarify and explain the various elements. The schematic will open in a new window that you can scroll and zoom.
Note that this is the full corridor schematic and includes all the changes above. Also note that some of the changes shown in the schematic near FM 1103 are actually from the preliminary designs for the I‑35 NEX project and are anticipated to be done as part of that project; they are shown in these plans to provide context for how that future project relates to the changes to be made in the first project on this page.
